Cinco de Mayo -- or the fifth of May -- is a holiday that commemorates the outnumbered Mexican army’s victory against the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. This day is not to be confused with Mexico’s Independence Day -- an event that occurred 50 years before Cinco de Mayo. So why do Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo in the first place and how will it affect banking for Americans?

Although Cinco de Mayo is widely observed all over the United States, it is neither a federal or a state holiday. Therefore, all U.S. banks including Chase, Citibank, and TD Bank will remain open on this festive holiday -- which lands on Monday. In addition, all government offices, public transportation, businesses and schools will resume their regular schedules.

If you plan on celebrating Cinco de Mayo and won't be able to stop by the bank, remember to utilize online, mobile and ATM banking. Since Cinco de Mayo is considered a normal business day for U.S. banks, there will be no delays in processing of the bank transactions.

Although a Mexican holiday, Cinco de Mayo came to symbolize freedom and democracy during the American Civil War. Over time, it evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture, heritage and pride in the U.S. -- especially in areas with a large Mexican-American population.

Everyone has a different way of observing this holiday -- as some people at Berkshire will make Cinco de Mayo rubber duckies of Warren Buffet to celebrate.

Many will come together on this holiday to celebrate with parades, street festivals, mariachi music performances, and parties with pinatas, along with Mexican food and margaritas! Many cities across the country has become famous for their annual Cinco de Mayo celebrations.

Here are some of the best cities to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in the U.S.:

  • Chicago
  • Denver
